06/21/2007: The session is well underway and the training has risen to a new level as our members embrace a deeper sense of realism and intensity.
At the opening of the session, we developed a new "standard weapon" for use in teaching the Universal System, which includes both cuts and thrusts. This weapon consists of a saber 2000 blade, a foil guard, a saber grip (for ambidexterity), and an epee pommel. The weapon can be managed like a foil for thrusting training as well as like a saber for cutting instruction.
After a minimum of six months of training and skirmishing with the "standard weapon," a student may select and begin training with the "training weapon," which is a safe and durable version of the original weapon choice. For example, one who has chosen rapier will purchase a rapier designed for skirmishing.
We are also aware that a serious duelist may want to own an authentic version of his weapon of choice. Lastly, a ceremonial sword is also an option. Essentially, this provides the opportuity for owning and maintaining a minimum of four swords:
1) The "standard weapon."
2) The "training weapon."
3) The "dueling weapon."
4) The "Ceremonial weapon."
